"Daddy, can I have a milkshake?" Alex asked politely, looking innocent.
Frank sighed. It was Saturday night- The Playwright's busiest night, and Ms. Lydia was too sick to watch Alex; hence she was here.
"No, sweetheart, why don't you go outside? You can sit at the bar and Bobby can make you a Shirley Temple," he said, rubbing his temples.
"Okay," Alex said with a shrug as she walked out into the very crowded resteraunt. She struggled onto the bar stool, swiveling it 'round and 'roud as she asked the young boy for a shirley temple. With an extra cherry. He was rather fond of Alex and always had time to play with the young girl.
While she waited for her drink Alex twirled one of the long braids that cascaded down her back. Her hair was so long that the two braids could make a knot! While she was doing this she noticed a familiar face enter the resteraunt with her mommy. She thought it was Charlie, her friend from the Annie tour.
"Oh my gosh! It is Charlie!" she said excitedly, clapping her small hands together.
"Charlie! Charlie! It's Alex!" she exclaimed as she ran toward her friend.

Charlie beamed as her and her mommy rode in the car towards the restaurant. It was a special night, well, she didn't know if it was a special night or not, but it was a Mommy-Charlie night and that was always special for her. Indeed, she was more than happy to be with her mommy most of the time, especially when it meant wearing pretty dresses and having her hair all done nicely. Her mom had made her dress special for her, and when she ran her fingers over the fabric, she smiled, it was so soft! Examining the fabric, she remembered how she had spun in the mirror before her mommy had come to her room to get her.
She had looked in the mirror, admiring herself happily. The white top fabric was a bit coarser than the bottom, but only because there were holes in it. Not bad holes, but holes that made it look cool. Underneath, there was a layer of green that showed through the holes in the white fabric. It was really cool the way it looked and when she had twirled around, the skirt belled out a bit. She had on white tights and green shoes with a big green ribbon and bow in her blonde hair. She looked at her mommy and smiled, she looked pretty too. Charlotte envied the way her mommy could get ready. She looked like a superstar when she got ready, like one of those ladies from the black and white movies. In her black dress, she looked even better. "Are we going to get there soon?" She asked with a cheerful smile, looking over the edge of the window to see out into the city.
"In two minutes Love," her mother answered happily and Charlie giggled, nodding. She was so excited. Twirling a strand of hair around her finger, she squeaked as they pulled into a parking garage and went to the first level. Thankfully someone was leaving and her mommy was able to pull into the parking space close to the front. Excitedly hopping out of the car after it was parked, Charlie put her little purse (filled with nothing but tissues and nail polish) over her shoulder and held out her small hand for her mother to take. Clasping her fingers around her mother's, they walked out of the garage and towards the restaurant on this Saturday night.
Her mother had said something about reservations and seven o'clock, Charlie didn't exactly get what it meant, but she knew they had to be there before seven o'clock. "You'll really like this place," her mother assured her and Charlie didn't doubt it. Her mother was a very smart woman, Charlotte learned and when they entered the restaurant, she couldn't help but smile and then instantly be distracted by a voice calling her name. Blinking, she grinned a toothy grin and raun towards the bar to meet her friend from the tour of Annie. "Alex!" she squeaked happily, "Hi!" She waved spastically at her friend only from a few feet away and smiled, "Are you here with your daddy?" she asked, not knowing that her father owned the restaurant and instantly assuming anyone under twenty-one at a restaurant was out with their favorite person in the world - their adoring parent.

Beaming as Charlie ran up to her she nodded her head eagerly as she asked if her daddy was here. "He owns this place, Charlie. He let me decorate, too! And he makes really, really good food!" she proclaimed, jumping out of her seat. "He's in the kitchen cooking some dinner, I think, so he let me sit out here and Bobby gives me Shirley Temples. I like your dress!" Alex said quickly, bouncing all over the place.
Alex really did love Charlie's dress. It was all flowy and it looked soft. And her hair was up and she had a real PURSE! Alex herself looked okay. She had a knee length traditional plaid skirt that was kinda flowly and a white button down shirt that reached her elbows. Her hair was in two french braids and she wore the necklace of a music note that she always wore.
Suddenly, Frank came out, dusting floury hands on his apron. "Alex, honey, what'd I tell you about leaving the bar?" he asked sleepily, noticing the company.
"Daddy, this is Charlie from Annie, 'member? And this is Mrs. Charlie's Mommy. Mrs. Charlie's Mommy, this is my daddy. C'mon, Charlie, we can go to the booth in the back. It's my special booth! I got crayons there and everything!" And taking Charlie's small hand in her own she led her to the special booth in the back with the box of freshly sharpened crazyons. This could be a fun night.

"Wow!" her dad owned this place?! Charlie couldn't even think about that. Her mommy didn't own something like that. Of course, they owned a house with her grandparents, but not a store! Her mommy worked wherever Charlie went, and that didn't mean she worked in the same place all the time. She pondered if Alex got free cookies from her daddy. That would be so cool. She wanted cookies. But - that wasn't what she was supposed to be focused on! Giggling softly, a blush crossed her face and she smiled, "Thanks! My mommy made it for me," she really liked her dress. She was glad someone else did too. "I like your outfit too," she nodded and smiled, her mind drifted back towards the thought of cookies.
When Alex brought out her daddy, Charlie looked at her mommy who was standing back a bit, looking around the restaurant while still keeping her eye on her daughter. Pursing her lips, a bright idea filled her head and she smiled, taking her mom's hand and pulled her forwards. Waving with her free hand, Charlie smiled happily at Mr. D'mora before looking back to Alex. She said crayons. Crayons and special booth - although it was supposed to be a mommy-Charlotte night, she could bend the rules. "Okay! Let's go!" Leaving her mother behind, she took Alex's hand and followed her towards the back, practically being able to smell the freshly sharpened crayons from that far away.
Meanwhile, back at the front of the restaurant, Kalista smiled awkwardly, unsure of what to say. The little girls, the only real bridge between the two adults had bolted and well, she did remember Frank D'mora, but not well enough to be buddy-buddy with him. It seemed though that she would need to reintroduce herself, considering Mrs. Charlie's Mom didn't work, she wasn't even a Mrs. Scarily enough, she probably wouldn't ever be one any way. "Well, however much Charlie's mom really sums me up, I'm Kalista Marcus. It's nice to see you again Mr. D'Mora. If you're busy, Alex can join us for dinner, if that's alright with you?" She wrung her hands behind her back and nervously smiled again, sometimes she still felt like a five year old in the face of men - thanks Peter.

Alex was radiating. She had a friend to share her special booth with. And her crayons. She opened up the two coloring books. "I have a My Little Pony and an Annie one, we can use the same one or you can pick one," she said politely, remembering what Daddy had told her about having people over. Bobbing her head and still smiling she had an idea and dashed into the kitchen and asked Mr. Zach for some cookies. The elderly black man had smiled and said he would bring them to her table.
"I ordered us some cookies, they're... on the house, I think. Mr. Zach makes the bestest chocolate chip cookies ever!" Alex said proudly, the smile never leaving her lips. Charlie had to like cookies- who didn't? Selecting a red crayon she opened the Annie one and put it between her and Charlie, in case she wanted to color it, too. She began to color Annie's hair on a page when she remembered the picture she had colored a while ago.
"Oh my gosh, I forgot! Look at this, I colored it during Annie!" she squeaked, opening to a picture of two of the orphans- Molly and Duffy. "It's us! I colored it to look like us! We both have blonde hair and pretty eyes!"

Frank stiffled a sigh as Alex ran off with her friend. He was tired and didn't really remember who 'Mrs. Charlie's Mommy' was. Racking his brain he finally remembered, and was actually greatful toward her for watching Alex several times. "Ms. Marcus, I remember. It's great to see you again! And I'm sure Alex would love to eat dinner with you. How are you, anyway? And Charlie?" he asked, curiously. Something about Kalista sparked a happy memory in his mind. She was very pretty and very kind. There was something else about her that he couldn't put his finger on- but he definately liked it.

Charlie was completely excited. There was nothing better than sharing time with her friend coloring! Sure, she was eight years old and that meant she was getting older, but that didn't mean she couldn't still color, especially with her good friend. She squeaked, she had good coloring books! And great crayons. All of her crayons at home were dull and icky. Alex had nice ones, all sharp and fresh, good. So they could color longer! What an exciting thing to do! Immediately picking up the black crayon to color in Annie's shoes and part of the background, she examined the picture - but was instantly distracted.
"Cookies?! Great!" she squeaked happily, bouncing in the seat a bit. Who didn't like cookies? Especially the best cookies ever, according to Alex. That meant Charlie had a lot to look forwards to, since her grandma made some pretty darn good cookies, she would have to be an objective judge when she tried these cookies that she hoped would arrive soon. She went to start coloring in the shoes when it seemed Alex had another idea.
Tilting her head to the side, Charlotte sat back on her feet and pursed her lips. Ah! she was going to another picture. Waiting anxiously, she leaned over the table and looked at the picture presented, two little blonde girls that Charlie immediately recognized as her and Alex as Molly and Duffy! Smiling wide, she grinned at her friend, "It looks just like us!" she squeaked and grabbed the My Little Pony book to find a picture of two ponies on teh same page. "Why don't you finish coloring the picture of Annie and I can color a picture of us as ponies?!" she asked excitedly, looking for different shades of blue and different shades of pinks on the table. She wanted to make a blue pony for Alex and a Pink pony for her. But they would both need blonde hair... so she would need yellows too...
As she flipped the pages, she stopped at a picture of two ponies eatting ice cream and cookies. That sure looked like them as ponies! Taking the blue crayon, she started to color in the picture carefully, thinking to herself as she did. "You know Alex..." she smiled deviously, still coloring as her plot formulated in her head, "you don't have a mommy, do you?" she wanted to be sure, before she continued planning.

At least he was nice. Kalista had to be thankful for that. Sometimes parents of other young children actors and actresses were so nasty, but it seeemed he didn't really see Charlie as a competition for his daughter and that meant he could treat her and her mother with respect. Frankly, Kal knew how her daughter was and didn't worry about the competition either, besides when little girls became friends, parents couldn't pull them apart, as though Kalista would even think about it. She was just glad Alex's father was above that sort of thing as well. Most people weren't. "Oh, we're good," Kalista smiled, still blushing a bit. "Charlie is looking for another part and I'm in between jobs, but you know, it's better than it has been."
She wasn't trying to be negative, she never did, the smile on her face spoke of her optimism about the situation. "But what about you and Alex? She seems quite happy, and well, you are doing splendidly for yourself by the looks of this place. It's a beautiful restaurant," she commented happily, "but you must be so busy. I'm sorry if I'm taking up your time."

Alex was thrilled that Charlie liked her crayons and her colorings. She squealed with glee when she found two ponies on the same page. Still smiling she colored in Annie and Sandy neatly. Minutes later, Mr. Zach came out with a plate two fresh baked cookies.
"For the ladies," he said chuckling.
"Charlie, try one!" Alex proclaimed, selecting the smaller one for herself and nibbling at it. As she did this she flipped through the coloring book and found another picture of two orphans and made them look very much like Alex and Charlie. It was when the orphans were all cleaned up and looked nice. "What color dress do you want?" she asked, pointing to the picture.
"You don't have a mommy, do you?"
Her small face drooped as she replied quietly, "No, but I gots a daddy and he's really neat." Pondering she stroked her chin like she saw Sherlock House did. Or something like that. "Hey! You don't have a daddy, right? What if..." she said excitedly, an idea forming in her blonde head...

Frank laughed softly at Kalista's optimism. He forgot how cheerful she was. "You know, there's open auditions for Les Miz soon, and Alex and I are thinking about going for it. Maybe you could come? It'd be fun if we were involved together," he mused.
"And, Kal, you could never take up my time. We had many laughs during Annie, like that show innocent. Damn, I said I wouldn't bring it up again!"

Coloring was indeed something that Charlie was more than happy to participate in. She loved to color, especially when it put ponies into the mix. It was something she wanted to learn how to do at some point, horseback ride. But, she knew her mom didn't have the money to pay for horseback riding lessons, so she didn't press too hard. She went to a birthday party once for another little girl at a horse barn. It had been so fun and the horses were so nice! She had even had one eat a piece of carrot out of her palm. The whisker things on it's muzzle had really tickled.
But, she was going to be eatting a cookie out of her own hand in a few seconds. Abandoning the coloring for a more... delicious pursuit, Charlie lifted the cookie out of the plate and felt it's warmth between its fingers before taking a nibble of the chocolatey chip goodness that was a cookie. Grinning she looked to Charlie, "This is the best... well, I mean, aside from Grandma's that is." Charlie looked around momentarily to make sure her grandma wasn't there, or her mom, and smiled. She didn't want to make her grandma sad after all, and homemade cookies by someone that loves you always makes the cookies even better. "Umm.... yellow!" she squeaked in response to Alex's question.
She had a lot of different favorite colors, yellow being one of them. For a picture such as the one Alex was coloring, yellow seemed appropriate. Yes, for a cheerful picture, yellow was better than anything! And it seemed, that Alex had the same train of thought that Charlie did, not that Charlie did anything to encourage that sort of behavior or thought process. She knew how great Alex's dad was and she knew how great her mom definetely was, so, why not have them be great together? "What if you know... we play like that movie - the parent trap!" she squeaked, she loved that movie, and it was a fantastic idea.

Kalista completely ignored the comment about being involved, it was theatre related, she told herself. Everyone in a cast was involved and that meant Kal could spend some extra time with Charlie and Alex, the little girls were so good for bringing some sunshine into an otherwise gloomy day. "I'll have to let Charlie know and have her decide. I know she is dying to play Cosette at some point. I guess I haven't been really checking the magazines like I should, but you know, things get busy. But, it sounds like something that would really be up her alley." Yes, Charlie had always wanted to be Cosette. She would sing "Castle on a Cloud" in the shower, in the car, anywhere given the chance to sing it. She'd definetely mention it to the little blonde girl, she would be so excited.
But, she couldn't help but blush a little when Frank spoke of Annie. She had enjoyed it very much, not only taking care of the costumes and the girls, but also because it was just such a fun experience, plus a lot of jokes and fun had been had on that tour. "Don't worry about it, good memories are attached to Annie. Here," she instantly thought of something and took out a scrap of paper from her pocketbook, "if Alex ever wants to get together with Charlie, give me or my mom, this is our house number, a call and one of us can pick her up or you can drop her off. I know the girls really like to spend time together, so a playdate or two would be nice for them," always thinking about her daughter.

Resuming her coloring Alex began with Charlie, coloring in her skin a very light shade of peach. She made her dress a vibrant yellow with pink flowers on it and colored the hat yellow and pink to match. She have her white tights with small, pink roses on then and colored her party shoes white (Alex was the only person she knew who colored things in white). She then colored her hair gold with yellow streaks in it and made her lips a nice shade of pink. For her portrait she made her skin a bit darker and her dress pink with yellow flowers and made her hat pink and yellow to match. Her tights were yellow with white roses on them and her shoes were white as well. Her and Charlie looked like twins!
"Hey Charlie! We look like twins!" she exclaimed, clasping her hands together. She began coloring the next page which was of Sandy and she made him his traditional colors with a City background.
"What if you know... we play like that movie - the parent trap!"
"Oh my gosh, yes! That's my favorite movie ever and I want a mommy! Let's do it!" Alex cried, hugging her hopefully new sister.

Frank smiled when Kal said she'd mention Les Miz to Charlie. It would be good for the girls to work together. When Kal wrote down her number Frank did the same thing, only on a napkin. "Alex doesn'tget out much, I'm very busy with work so she usually stays at her neighbor's but I know she'd much rather be with Charlie," he said with a smile, making sure it didn't sound like he was neglecting his daughter.
He definately wasn't, Frank was, in fact, an excellant father. A little strict at times, but a good father none the less.
